FGM is the cutting or injuring of a girl’s genitals when there is no medical reason for it. It does not help her body. It can harm her for the rest of her life.
It is usually done to girls from the time they are babies up to about fifteen. The World Health Organization calls it a violation of human rights. It happens in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia — including the parts of Kenya and Tanzania where Pastor Peter and III Hands work.

CUTTING SEASON
In the communities Pastor Peter serves, there is a cutting season. That is the time of year families expect the girls to be cut. If a girl refuses, or if she might be forced, she needs somewhere to stay until it is over. She is usually gone about eight weeks. Then she can go home.
Pastor Peter and the local leaders help the girls have a camp — food, a place to sleep, people to look after them, and police so the camp stays safe.
